In a previous article I discussed the consequence of another earthquake in Alaska, such as occurred in 1964. [ HERE] This article will deal with a more frightening scenario—Pole Shift.

In this hypotheses, it is summarized by several factors leading to a shifting in the poles. However; there is considerable speculation as to what might actually occur in this event.

Generally there are two distinct types of pole shifts that could occur:

The geophysical pole shift scenario; whereupon the north and south poles change relative position, and the geomagnetic pole shift—a scenario that has the inner (magnetic core) of the earth shifting due to some outside interference.

Geophysical Pole Shifting was the basis for the blockbuster movie 2012; In the movie, the earth’s physical poles shifted due to an interaction with a rogue planet passing through our solar system. This scenario is embraced by many ardent followers of the Planet-X scenario.  [ HERE ] Among the followers are the Zeta’s. An internet based survival group that been on the scene for twenty or more years.
In their Troubled Times forum, Anchorage Alaska is described as;
 
“Anchorage is dealt several blows during the shift, as it lies along a coastline, is near a chain of volcanoes, and borders the Pacific where subduction of plates will occur. During the week of rotation stoppage, the water normally pooled at the equator due to the effect of rotation will drift toward the poles, equalizing. Thus, the tides will be higher. At the shift, the volcanoes to the west will explode spewing ash over the nearby vicinity, which will become upwind to Anchorage to some degree due to the prevailing westerly winds which will still pull the ash toward Anchorage. Sloshing water, already higher than normal along the coast, will rise to the tops of the buildings in the city. After the shift, however, the ocean fishing, and the familiarity of the people with this activity, should prove a good lifestyle. Survivors will need to become accustomed to a very warmer climate, as the new Anchorage will be close to the new equator. “
 
“Alaska will fare well during the coming geological changes for a number of reasons. Where it is now in a cold climate, it will move to a very temperate location. The volcanic eruptions anticipated where Alaska's active volcanoes now exist should blow out across the water, not inland, under the influence of the new prevailing westerly winds, so the land should be spared. And since it is scarcely populated, there will not be the problem of masses of starving humans to contend with, which can create destructive riots. In selecting locations in Alaska, one should consider the possibility of tidal waves along the coast, but the key consideration should be the volcanoes, which are already active, and which will increase their activity to the point of exploding during the pole shift.
 
The Alaskan Pipeline will inevitably be fractures along its course during the pole shift and will thus drain dry. What oil does not soak into the ground will be lit and burned during the lightning storms that occur during the pole shift, a burning that might start at only one place but will spark burning along the entire course. Oil that does not drain out of the pipeline will burn at the ends, creating a torch that may burn for months.”
 
The effects of a geophysical pole shift would include the following catastrophes:
·         Mega-Earthquakes
·         Tsunamis
·         Large scale Volcanic eruptions
·         Cyclonic winds
·         Massive Inland flooding
·         Meteor showers
·         Wild fires
·         Tectonic Plate shift
·         Ocean sloshing
·         Geophysical position change
 
This particular scenario is horrific in itself. The basis for this hypotheses has been argued by several learned scholars, and the potentialities discussed over the years by think tanks and various government agencies. While none have publically announced that this scenario is credible, none have denounced it either.
 
Currently there are reams of pages that point to the likelihood of this scenario occurring in the early part of December 2012. Chief among them are the ancient Mayans predictions, Edward Cayce, Jean Dixon, Nostradamus, and others who have published prophecies regarding this. Additionally the Holy Bible also predicts a similar fate—though no exact date is given therein.
 
If a number of volcanoes were to erupt either at the same time, or in sequence throughout the course of a week; the result would lead to a “Nuclear Winter” scenario. The introduction of massive ash clouds into the upper atmosphere would block out the sunlight, and temperatures would drop significantly. A sudden drop in temperatures would thereby have cataclysmic effects on the entire globe.
 
In a geomagnetic pole shit, the magnetic poles would change polarity, and many scientists feel that this scenario is more plausible, and more likely to occur. Experts believe that the present magnetic field changes are a prelude to such a pole shift scenario.
 
One cannot also discount the recognized association between earthquakes and the movement of the planets. Tidal like effects drive the oceans tides, and is thought to also affect wildlife, as well as human moods and behaviors.
 
The Dark Rift is the galactic alignment of the December solstice sun with the Galactic equator. This alignment occurs as a result of the precession of the equinoxes. This Galactic Alignment occurs only once every 26,000 years, and was what the ancient Maya were pointing to with the 2012 end-date of their Long Count calendar. Many people strongly believe that the galactic alignment will signal the end of the world scenarios.
 
No matter what anyone believes, the fact is that we are witnessing first hand a rapid and progressive change in our world.  Winter storms have been more severe than before, flooding has plagued many of the Midwest states, while drought has affected others.
 
Marine sea life have mysteriously beached themselves on the shorelines of our coasts, baffling the scientific community. Black silt that is normally found on the ocean floor, has turned up in the Gulf of Mexico, and nobody can explain how it got there, or even why. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity has increased dramatically over the last few years.
 
 
 
All of these occurrences correspond to the fact that planet earth is presently undergoing severe changes. The future outcome is as of yet unpredictable, but many people around the world are convinced that in 2012 mankind will undergo a catastrophic event that will rapidly change our planet, and perhaps erase a large percentage of the human population.
 
Historically it has been proven that our ancestors endured a similar fate during their time on this small planet. Considering the fact that most of the deserts around the world were once lush tropical continents, and the unmitigated fact that fossilized fish have been found in our southern deserts, and also in the Hindu Kusch mountains—would substantiate that earth’s history is filled with pole shift theories.

In the wake of the severe earthquake that savaged Haiti, one must remember that Alaska faced a similar catastrophe in 1964.


Lasting nearly five minutes, it was the most powerful recorded earthquake in U.S. and North American history, and the second most powerful ever measured by seismograph. It had a magnitude of 9.2, at the time making it the second largest earthquake in the recorded history of the world.

131 people lost their lives in the earthquake, and thousands were left devastated throughout much of the areas hardest hit.

A large tsunami that reached 70 feet high, and travelling at 450 miles an hour slammed into Alaska’s coastline—flooding much of the areas and creating rockslides that resulted in massive property damages. Vertical displacement of the land rose to approximately 38 feet.
Girdwood and Turnagain Arm, were destroyed by subsidence and subsequent tidal action, and 20 miles of the Seward Highway sank below the high-water mark of Turnagain Arm effectively cutting off the southern road system.

Following the initial earthquake there were approximately 10,000 aftershocks. Eleven major aftershocks were recorded on the first day alone with a magnitude of 6.0, and nine more occurred over the next three days. The earthquake’s aftershocks continued for another eighteen months.
The question that one must ask is will it happen again?

In a book titled “We are the earthquake generation” written in 1978 by Jeffrey Goodman, PHD; details startling facts that point to several distinct phenomena that could trigger another Alaska earthquake.

In one of the hypotheses Goodman concludes that the earth has a bulge along its equator. The circumference of the earth is 27 miles greater around the equator than around the poles. It’s thought that a large accumulation of ice on either pole would be enough to destabilize the earth’s spin, and unbalance it enough to cause the massive tectonic plates to shift—thereby resulting in mega-earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as eruption of several volcanoes within the region.
He also points to other causes that contribute to earthquakes—such as off shore drilling, nuclear weapons discharges, volcanic eruptions, and lowered water levels in the ground that could be the catalysis for future earthquakes.
Considering that Anchorage is the central hub where all of the cargo and supplies are distributed throughout Alaska, the ramifications of another severe earthquake would have potentially devastating effects on the rest of the state.
During the 2009 Mt. Redoubt eruption, most of the air traffic into and out of Anchorage was cancelled because of the volcanic ash threat it posed to commercial aviation. Alaskan’s were stranded in Seattle and Portland awaiting flights to Anchorage, some waited for days until a flight to Fairbanks brought them closer to home.
Alaska is one of the most active volcanic areas on the globe. The Aleutian islands have more active and dormant volcanoes than any other place in the world—and they are prone to earthquake activities.
Should another large earthquake shake the region, it’s possible that one or more volcanoes might erupt. Tidal waves, ash filled skies, and destroyed roadways would wreak havoc on Alaska’s ability to respond to a catastrophe of this nature.
Alaska is one of the most isolate states in the country. Nearly everything that is needed for consumption is either flown in, or brought in by trucks or barges. Any disruption of these vital supply routes will have instantaneous results on critical infrastructure such as fuel distribution, food, and other consumer goods.
Having the foresight to stockpile emergency supplies is almost critical to Alaska’s families. Should another earthquake strike alaska, like it did in 1964, the consequences could be devastating.

UF students design cruise terminal for old Ford site

The former Ford assembly plant that sits at the base of the Mathews Bridge could one day be a cruise ship terminal and destination port, according to a study conducted by a group of students at the University of Florida.

A group of 16 students in the university’s College of Design, Construction and Planning department of interior design created design possibilities for the 86-year-old building that include 60,000 square feet of cruise ship terminal space, 50,000 square feet of boutique hotel space, 10,000 square feet of restaurant/lounge space and 40,000 square feet of what the students termed “wild card” space that included a variety of possible uses including a cinema, convention space and art display space.

Preliminary cost estimates for the project from cruise ship consultants are around $30 million.

The Jacksonville Port Authority is considering moving the cruise terminal at Dames Point to Mayport or two other unnamed sites east of the Dames Point Bridge. The authority needs a new terminal because the site of the present cruise terminal at Dames Point will become home to Hanjin Shipping Co.’s new container terminal.

About 80 percent of major cruise line ships can’t pass under Dames Point bridge and nearby wires, said port authority CEO Rick Ferrin.

Sonny Redmond, one of the partners in the investment group that owns the property, Hill Street LLC, said he hopes to use the students’ design suggestions as the basis for a future development plan for the site, but not unless he earns the support of the community for the idea.

“In order to have a project like this work, you have to have 100 percent support from all the stakeholders,” Redmond said.

The 165,000-square-foot facility is part of a 35-acre tract that Hill Street owns that stretches from the base of the bridge to Talleyrand Avenue. The facility was built for the Ford Motor Co. in 1924-25. It was used as an assembly plant until the mid-1930s and then for storage and shipping through the 1950s. Although the property has been through a succession of owners until Hill Street acquired it in 2001, it has continued to be leased out to various industrial users over the years.

Redmond said the group didn’t have any specific development plans for the property when it bought it, but when the president of the Florida chapter of the nonprofit group DOCOMOMO, which advocates for preserving historic structures, asked Assistant Professor Marty Hylton to have his students review the project as a possible cruise ship terminal, he decided to take him up on the offer.

The idea has already gotten the attention of some in the cruise ship industry. Mike Greve, president of the Miami cruise ship development consultation company Global Destinations, said he likes the site because of its history, because it is an existing building that would reduce the capital expense of construction and because it’s a Downtown site.

The owner of the property now plans to contract with Global Destinations to have the site evaluated and graded for its potential as a cruise ship terminal site. If it grades well, Redmond said the next step would be approaching the city about the idea.

Just as volcanoes involve magma interacting with rock, so too do glaciers often involve interplays between water and ice. As such, giant events within glaciers can occur, with icequakes in Antarctica known to reach the force of a magnitude 7 earthquake.

To learn more about icequakes, scientists in Alaska used equipment and techniques normally employed for monitoring seismic events to investigate the Bering Glacier, which flows from the St. Elias mountain range to the south-central coast of Alaska. Ice in this temperate glacier is near its melting point, leading to a history of dramatic surges.

Snap, crackle, pop

In the spring of 2007, researchers deployed five monitoring stations a mile or so apart from each other on the glacier. The area proved extraordinarily active, generating 160,000 seismic events over the course of some two months in both the shallow and deep portions of the ice, with an average of one event roughly every 30 seconds.

"A huge number of pops and creaks are occurring all of the time in glaciers," said researcher Michael West, a seismologist at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks. "Something as simple as a warm afternoon or a rainstorm has a direct and almost immediate influence on a glacier that can be tracked by listening to the creaks and groans that the ice makes."

As spring kicked in and melting began in force, the glacier went from quiet to loud.

"I compare it to a bear groaning as it emerges from hibernation in the spring," West said. "These results give us a time frame for how long it takes the glacier to come back to life after a relative winter repose. More importantly however, it provides an example of how the same techniques could be used over several years to map long-term changes."

Icequake flavors

Just as seen with volcanoes, there were quakes that shook the glacier back and forth at relatively high frequencies as well as others that made the ice shudder at low frequencies. A third class was seen as well — hybrids that were high- and low-frequency in rapid succession.

When it comes to volcano-linked earthquakes, high-frequency events are often thought to result when pressure from a pool of magma causes solid rock to crack or slip, abrupt motions that send out pulses of waves.

The scientists think cracking of brittle ice might explain high-frequency icequakes as well. However, they are uncertain about how volcano-linked, low-frequency icequakes might occur.

Hybrid icequakes suggest a link between how low- and high-frequency quakes work. The researchers suggest pressure from water pooled on the surface might drive existing cracks to pop wide, leading to a burst of high-frequency shaking from this cracking followed by extended low-frequency rumbling due to water gushing into the new opening.

By tracking icequakes over months and years as well as across different types of glaciers, one could pin down what causes different kinds of quakes, the scientists suspect. Once the cause is deciphered, further seismic monitoring of glaciers could then reveal if the icequakes are changing over time — due, say, to season or climate — and explain why.

In a way, West said, these creaks and pops are like "the pulse of a glacier." Future research could help scientists monitor the health of glaciers as doctors would patients, he noted.

"The primary challenge is that glaciers are extremely challenging places to install equipment," West said. "While the highest resolution data probably comes from instruments installed directly in the ice, we may have to carry out long-term observations using instruments installed on the bedrock adjacent to glaciers. It is doubtful that in-ice installations will ever be able to run consistently for many years. Since glaciers flow, the stations are always moving!"

West and his colleagues detailed their findings in the April issue of the journal Geology.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The swarm of small shallow earthquakes that began April 5 at the Redoubt volcano has ended, and the shaking returned to background levels.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory lowered the aviation code Monday from yellow to green.

Eruptions from the 10,197-foot volcano early last year disrupted air travel, dusted Anchorage with ash and sent a mudflow that partially flooded the Drift River Oil Terminal.





just thought it was interesting that the volcanoes that seemed so distant from the city have such a drastic effect.
